7 Days in Devon

Day 1

Spend the morning in Plymouth. Visit the National Marine Aquarium, explore the Barbican and the Hoe including Smeaton's Tower and Plymouth Gin.

After lunch head onto Dartmoor. Visit Princetown and the Dartmoor Prison Museum then continue up towards Postbridge and the bronze-age settlement of Grimspound.

Stay overnight on Dartmoor - try the Two Bridges Hotel.

Day 2

Walk part of the Two Moors Way or Dartmoor Way trails.

Enjoy lunch and local ales in a centuries old moorland pub - try the Church House Inn in Holne.

Visit Buckfast Abbey a Benedictine monastery open to visitors then head down to Totnes, a quirky creative town steeped in history and with great shopping and eating.

Stay overnight in Dartmouth - try Cladda B&B

Day 3

Explore the picturesque harbour town of Dartmouth with its cobbled streets, art galleries and superb restaurants and Dartmouth Castle, which guards the River Dart's narrow entrance to the harbour.

After lunch meander down to the South Hams and visit the stunningly situated Slapton Lee nature reserve and the picturesque town of Kingsbridge.

Spend the night in Dartmouth.

Day 4

Take the ferry across the river from Dartmouth to Kingswear and head up to Greenway House, once the holiday residence of Agatha Christie and sitting on the banks of the river Dart.

Explore the English Riviera, the original Devon seaside destination, including the fishing port of Brixham and the sandy beaches such as Goodrington Sands.

Stay overnight in Torquay - try the Grand Hotel.

Day 5

Take the coast road up towards Exeter and enjoy the views across Shaldon bridge. Stop at the seafront town of Dawlish and nearby Dawlish Warren nature reserve and marvel at a stunning stretch of Brunel's South Devon Railway.

Visit Powderham Castle, the 600 year old home of the 18th Earl of Devon.

Stay overnight in Exeter - try Silversprings Guest House. 

Day 6

Explore the Roman town of Exeter and its Mediaeval Cathedral. Take a Red Coat Guided Tour to discover more about the city's unique history and culture. Enjoy a spot of shopping or explore the Underground Passages.

Head out of Exeter to Haldon Forest Park with its great walking and cycling routes or Go Ape! and swing between the trees at this adrenaline-pumping activity centre. Relax over a traditional rural pub meal - try the Nobody Inn in Doddiscombsleigh.

Stay overnight in Exeter.

Day 7

Explore the Exe Estuary town of Topsham, where antiques, arts & crafts, and delicatessens abound and a good choice of lunch options.

Carry on to the Jurassic Coast and visit the seafront towns of Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and Beer with their imposing cliffs and elegant promenades. En route visit Otterton Mill, a watermill still milling on certain days.

Go home refreshed and recharged!
